A mountain cabin trip with dogs is different from a hotel stay. Rivers, trails, red clay, and back roads. Here is what tends to be useful.
Things to Consider Bringing
Food & Water
- Enough food for the trip plus a little extra. In winter, mountain roads can become impassable after a storm. Having several extra days of food on hand is worth considering.
- A collapsible water bowl for hikes and day trips (bowls are at the cabin but not in your daypack)
- Any supplements or medications
Health & Safety
- Flea and tick prevention. Mountain forest means ticks are active year-round.
- Any prescription medications
- Vaccination records, useful if you plan to use local daycare or boarding
- Your vet's phone number and the numbers for local vets and emergency animal clinics
- Basic dog first aid: gauze, antiseptic wipes, tweezers for ticks, self-adhesive bandage wrap
Gear
- A leash. Georgia state parks and national forest trails require a fixed 6-foot maximum; retractables are not permitted.
- A second leash as backup
- A collar with ID tags
- Microchip registration current
- A dog life jacket if your dog swims and the Toccoa is running fast (it moves quickly after rain)
- Dog booties or paw wax for rocky terrain
Comfort
- Your dog's bed or a familiar blanket
- An old sheet, blanket, or furniture cover. Many dogs are used to the couch or bed at home, and having something to throw over a chair or cushion makes everyone comfortable. If your dog has strong opinions about furniture, you already know how that goes.
- A few familiar toys
- Your dog's regular shampoo if they have a sensitive coat (the wash station is at the cabin)

- Vaccination records
- Tick prevention
- A waterproof bag or liner for wet dog gear on the drive home
